John Simpson’s real name was Jake Kirkpatrick, he changed his name because a deserter from the merchant marines might not be accepted into the army with a name like that!
John Simpson loved animals all of his life, he worked with horses and donkeys and at his home he kept rabbits and pigeons. John Simpson was very courageous because he went out into the fields of Gallipoli to save wounded men on his donkey, but unfortunately he got shot by machine guns.
When John’s dad died he worked to help support his mother and his sister.
John Simpson was a milk boy for four years.
John Simpson was 173cm tall, stockily built and weighed 12 stone (76kg), his complexion was fair blue eyes and brown hair.
On 25th of August 1914 John Simpson joined the Australian Imperial Force at Blackboy Hill camp, Perth.
